Statement on Chile and COP25 - March For Science

Statement on Chile and COP25

Last week the Chilean government canceled the COP25 climate change summit amidst nationwide protests over social and economic inequality, healthcare, water rights, and the pension system. The conference would have been a great opportunity for Chile to address many of these issues of social injustice that are connected to the climate crisis.

We stand in solidarity with the Chilean people who have taken to the streets to protest peacefully, as well as the victims of human rights violations throughout the country. We support their demands for a better health system, nationalization of natural resources, structural modifications on the pension system and, overall, a more equitable distribution of the country’s wealth.

The decision to suspend the conference shows how social and climate justice are inextricably linked, and we believe the cancellation signifies a great loss toward the demands of the people.

We, as the largest grassroots community of scientists and science advocates in the world, also support the youth-led climate strikes to be held in November and December, and join the call for a People’s Climate Summit that is led by civil society and frontline communities, and excludes polluters. To effectively address the climate crisis, we must put the people and human rights first.

Signed,
