As a global community of science advocates, we must speak up and demand an end to the harmful policy of detaining and separating children from their parents at the U.S. border.
Many studies show that detention and forced separation cause toxic stress and lifelong trauma (1). Medical professionals have reported dangerous conditions in U.S. detention camps, such as overcrowding, lack of hygienic facilities and medical care, malnutrition, infection, harassment, sexual abuse, lack of physical comfort, and other forms of psychological trauma (2).
The science is clear — these policies cause catastrophic and life-long harm. Several professional organizations including the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, the American Psychological Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics have released statements urging an end to these harmful policies.
We join them in raising our voices, and we urge the scientific community to take action:
☎️ Call Congress (and your state & local officials), and ask them to close the camps and reunite families. Find your representatives here
✊ Join local rallies and protests, such as the Lights for Liberty Vigil on Friday, July 12
💵 Donate and support organizations defending immigrant communities such as the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), Texas Civil Rights Project, United We Dream, and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Here’s a comprehensive list.
